ITINERARY

DAY 1: ARRIVE SANTIAGO, CHILE

Arrive in Santiago, where you set out on a guided walk of the city, which sits in a dry valley wrapped in the snow-capped Andes Mountains. View the presidential palace, La Moneda, and the Palacio de los Tribunales de Justicia, which houses the Supreme Court of Chile. Next, visit the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, dedicated to ancient artwork and artifacts from Central and South America. Continue to Plaza de Armas — the city’s main square — which is home to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santiago, city hall, the central post office and the National Historical Museum, set in a 19th-century royal palace. In the plaza itself, you may see artists at work, chess games being played and possibly a dance performance. Continue to the peaceful Barrio Lastarria neighborhood, which you explore on foot. See the neoclassical National Museum of Fine Arts and riverside Parque Foresta. Tonight, enjoy dinner at a fabled restaurant within walking distance of your hotel.

DAY 2: SANTIAGO | EXPLORING CHILEAN CUISINE

Discover Santiago’s vibrant market district as you work your way from Plaza de Armas to La Vega Central, Mercado Tirso de Molina and Mercado Central, where local residents go about their daily routines. Explore the bustling markets, discovering local ingredients and learning about the rich history of Chilean cuisine. After an afternoon at leisure, indulge in dinner and Chilean wine at the private home of a food enthusiast, cook and art lover.

DAY 3: VALPARAISO | WINES OF THE CASABLANCA VALLEY

Transfer overland to the Casablanca Valley, situated on a coastal plain, 1,300 feet above sea level. The relatively young wine-growing region is best-known for its crisp white wines, such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, while its cooler coastal area is noted for its quality Pinot Noirs. Explore Emiliana Organic Vineyards, joined by an enologist as you delve deeper into the winemaking process, creating your own vintage and submitting it to a jury for judging. Then, at Matetic Vineyard, savor lunch in the wine cellar. Later, check in to your hotel in the port city of Valparaiso, known for its steep funiculars and vibrant, clifftop homes with flower-adorned balconies.

DAY 4: VALPARAISO | CHARMING PORT CITY

After a leisurely breakfast at your hotel, take a guided walk through Valparaiso’s cobbled streets. Visit the Plaza de la Victoria, with its lovely Neptune Fountain and Turri Clocktower. Continue to Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda’s hilltop residence-turned-museum. After lunch at a restaurant overlooking the bay, change gears and explore the city’s graffiti culture alongside a local muralist painter.

DAY 5: MENDOZA, ARGENTINA | INTO WINE COUNTRY

After breakfast, transfer overland to the airport in Santiago, where you are assisted with check-in and fly to Mendoza. Upon arrival, you are met by an A&K representative and transferred to your vineyard hotel overlooking the Andes. Settle in before enjoying a seasonally inspired dinner at the lodge’s on-site restaurant.

DAY 6: MENDOZA | FRUITS OF THE VINE

Spend the day visiting lauded local wineries, where you partake in tastings. You may opt to travel between vineyards by bike or on horseback. Later, attend an Argentinian cooking class and enjoy a fireside dinner overlooking picturesque vineyards.

DAY 7: MENDOZA | EXPLORE YOUR WAY

After breakfast, partake of one of the included activities offered on site, such as horseback riding at a local estancia (ranch), a short or long hike through the Andes, depending on your desired length and level of difficulty, or an active bike outing complemented by optional zipline or rappelling adventures. This afternoon, relax with a yoga class or massage at your hotel’s spa. Tonight, sit down to a candlelit dinner at a historic vineyard in the Andean highlands.

DAY 8: BUENOS AIRES | ATTENDING AN ASADO

After breakfast, fly to Buenos Aires, where, upon arrival, you are transferred to your exclusive hotel in the city’s upscale La Recoleta district. In the afternoon, visit La Recoleta Cemetery, where Eva Perón, presidents of Argentina, Nobel Prize winners and a granddaughter of Napoleon were laid to rest. Later, attend a richly satisfying eight-course asado.

DAY 9: BUENOS AIRES | DANCING THE TANGO

This morning, explore the historic, seven-tiered Teatro Colón, famed for its Italian pink marble stairwells, French stained glass details, massive crystal chandelier, and acoustics ranked among the finest in the world. Continue to Plaza de Mayo, the oldest public square in Buenos Aires and a setting for many pivotal, historic events. Then, drive through the barrios (wards) of La Boca and San Telmo, the latter home to artists’ studios, ethnic restaurants, antique shops and boutiques, as well as a lively Sunday market within central Plaza Dorrego. In the evening, attend a private tango lesson, gaining expertise from members of the famed Rojo Tango cabaret. Afterward, enjoy dinner and watch a tango performance at the renowned venue.

DAY 10: BUENOS AIRES | PREPARING EMPANADAS

Discover the Palermo and Villa Crespo neighborhoods, where you admire local graffiti and street art. Visit an artist’s workshop and try your hand at creating a mural. After strolling the city’s streets, attend an Argentine cooking class, during which you prepare empanadas, a traditional entrée and a dulce de leche-based dessert. This evening is yours to enjoy at leisure.

DAY 11: DEPART BUENOS AIRES
